Primarily studio portraits (mounted albumen prints) of Senator Leland Stanford, Jane Lathrop Stanford, Leland Stanford Jr., Gertrude Stanford, and Elizabeth Stanford. Also includes photographs of President William Harrison with Stanford during Harrison's visit to Stanford University. Studios represented include Bradley and Rulofson, Taber, and Carleton Watkins of San Francisco; Walary of New York; and Sarony of Paris. There are also a few images taken by Leland Stanford, Jr.

Jane Eliza Lathrop was born August 25, 1828, the daughter of Dyer Lathrop of Albany, New York. In 1850 she married Leland Stanford, returning with him to California in 1855 where they settled in Sacramento. Leland Stanford later became President of the Southern Pacific Railroad and Governor of California. Their only child, Leland Stanford, Jr., was born in 1868.
